Tech Council of Maryland Announce Winners at 2nd Annual CIO & CTO Live! Awards

(Rockville, MD) -November 8, 2007- The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) announced the winners of its Second Annual CIO&CTO Live! Awards before a full house last night at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Rockville, MD. The Mid-Atlantic CIO & CTO Live! Awards doubled its audience size over the previous year to more than 300 technology professionals and saw its nominations increase by more than 40 percent.

The Mid-Atlantic CIO&CTO Live! Awards is the first, best and only awards program in the region to recognize the outstanding achievements of the area’s IT professionals.

“If you weren’t at last night’s CIO&CTO Live! Awards program, we certainly hope you’ll join us next year,” said Julie Coons, Chief Executive officer of TCM. “The record breaking attendance, the number of nominations and the quality of our finalists, clearly establishes CIO & CTO Live! as one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most important events for the IT community.”

Each award was given to the IT Executive who has been a proven leader, a visionary, and innovator of new technology for their organizations in the Public/Non-Profit, Government and Commercial sectors. The following awards were presented by Tom Knox, Partner, Morrison & Foerster, who also served as the event’s Master of Ceremonies.

Gregory Smith was selected as the winner of the IT Executive of the Year, Public/Non Profit Company. Mr. Smith was honored for his strategic technology visions and passion for public service.

As Vice President and CIO, Information Technology for the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Mr. Smith implemented many successful projects. These include the deployment of a VSAT satellite in the Kingdom of Bhutan for internet connectivity in hard to reach places, the development and pilot of a Blackberry PDA-based species inventory tracking system, and a conservation project/portfolio management system for use within WWF.

Dr. Gregg Bailey was selected as the winner for the IT Executive of the Year, Government Sector. Dr. Bailey is tasked with ensuring that the IT infrastructure for the nation’s leading law enforcement agency is functioning and operational to keep our country safe.

As Assistant Director and Chief Information Officer, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Dr. Bailey has implemented the Enterprise Information Sharing Solution Agent Access Anywhere Portal Pilot. This application allows special agents the ability to access critical information from remote locations with limited or no traditional connectivity. As a result, first responders are now connected within less than two hours of arriving on the scene instead of the previous 12-hour standard.

Martin Roesch was selected as the winner for the IT Executive of the Year, Commercial Company. Mr. Roesch played a vital role in open source detection and prevention technology, with the invention of SNORT.

As Chief Technology Officer, Founder and Creator of SNORT for Soucrefire, Mr. Roesch is leading the way of open source technology in the market place. He has built an internationally recognized company and brought some of the best talent in the technology industry here to Maryland.

The audience also heard from Andres Mendes, Chief Technology Officer, Special Olympics, who received the award last year for the Public/Non-Profit sector.
