Careers in Biotechnology

A comprehensive guide to careers in the biotech field. Designed as a guide for school counselors, the guide covers the types of jobs in biotech, the qualifications needed for those jobs, community college training programs, and gives some advice on job searching. Biotechnology Institute BioGENEius Challenge

High schools students in Maryland with biotechnology projects are invited to compete in the state BioGENEius competition. Finalists are sponsored to compete in the northeast regional competition with the opportunity to represent the region at the International BioGENEius Challenge during the Annual BIO Convention.

J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI)

JCVI offers a variety of education programs for students and teachers including a mobile lab for middle schools in the DC metro region, professional development for teachers and fellowships.

Johns Hopkins University

Engineering Innovation: Johns Hopkins University hosts this summer camp for high school students in which they explore engineering concepts. Students learn about career and educational opportunities from professionals while at the same time, earning transferrable credit from the university.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Science Education (OSE)

NIH OSE offers access to free K-12 science curriculum supplements, posters, videos, NIH speaker's bureau and much more.

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE)

Research Science Institute (RSI): A free, six-week long program for 80 of the world’s most accomplished high school students. Held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, RSI aids students with their individual development of a research project while also helping them to kick start their careers in science, math, engineering or technology.

USA Biology Olympiad (USABO): USABO is the premiere biology competition for American high school students. Twenty finalists are invited to a residential training program where they learned advanced biological concepts and lab skills. Ultimately four students earn the right to represent the USA at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), a worldwide competition with roughly 60 countries competing.

Institute for Bioscience & Biotechnology Research

This is a newly created center is a collaboration among the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
