The Young Science Explorer Program (YSEP) is a 30-hour summer workshop where rising seventh and eighth graders can explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related areas of study and careers. The program targets students from traditionally underserved communities in Maryland. Since 2009, the camp has held programs in Montgomery County in partnership with Montgomery College and in Baltimore in partnership with Towson University.
Twenty students per session are engaged in a weeklong experience using leading edge bioscience laboratory techniques. In addition to intensive hands on laboratory work taught by experienced instructors, students also participate in several field trips to local Maryland science organizations and leading companies.
YSEP engages middle school students as they begin to form opinions about science and their future careers. Participants will experience a wide variety of careers, meet real-life scientists and explore ways that Maryland organizations are researching and developing products and therapies. The goal is to leverage these first-hand experiences to help shape participants career decisions and positively influence their view of science as a career.
Participants have shown a statically significant increase of 27 percent in content knowledge and measurable gains in attitude and interest in science as a career.
